Social Humanities Students Can’t be a Successful Person?
Based on the meaning of the word, social humanities is a science that includes philosophy, law, history, language, literature, art, etc. And the second is the intrinsic meaning of humanism values.
As a social humanities student (philosophy), I often to think that “Did I choose the right major?”, “Can I become a successful person if I choose this major?”, “What do you want to be a graduate of the social humanities major?”, and “What is the related industries if I graduated from this major?”, and so on. It’s quite skeptical at first, because it is a fact that a social humanities major is the major with the fewest interest in my country if we look up the database of entry test colleges (SBMPTN).
I acknowledge that my major is not as sexy as other majors, such as engineering, economics, psychology, medical, science, communication, politics, sociology, and so on. However, I have curiosity about this field. Therefore, I keep choosing philosophy as my major and I’m working on my thesis now.
As the time passed, I found the answer to the questions in the first paragraph. Indeed, this major is not a practical field that will give us practical skills after we graduate like any other major as I mentioned in the second paragraph. However, at the end of my college, I’m grateful that I’m not getting my first and second choices (Law and Psychology). I can conclude that, to be a successful person is not only determined by your college major. It is broader than that. Also, there are so many industries that are related to social humanities majors.
As I said in my previous article, the majority, especially in my country, only consider education as the process for careers. Well, I agree with that. However, if we only consider education as a foundation for our careers, then we bury the essential meaning of education itself. In the mid-year studying philosophy, I realized that the essential meaning of education is to make mind, not careers.
I do believe there are people who disagree with my opinion. They do still consider the substance of education is to get a job. But, in my opinion, if I become the CEO of a huge company, the first thing that I do is to make sure all my employees or candidates are the person who has mindful thoughts. I don’t give a fuck about their major, college, tribe, country, religion, races, thesis, zodiac, or so on you named it. Because for me, the indicators to measure the quality of thoughts are broader than just a degree and title. Someone can have a doctor’s degree, but still a donkey at once, mark my word.
After living in this country for more than 23 years, I believe the main reason why my people are having a false paradigm about education is that it can not separate from its environment and culture. In Indonesia, we don’t have Wall Street or Silicon Valley. Our economic policies are much worse and certainly not equal with China. We are the top five most corrupt countries in the world. We are broke as hell. But, I do believe there is still a chance for us to be a better country. There are still Indonesian youngsters who have logic, mindful thoughts, and great visionaries out there. Ah, God save this beautiful country.
Ok, back to basic. The statement about social humanities student can’t be a successful person is a stupid statement because the meaning of successful is different for each person. We can’t generalize the meaning. It’s a thing that is not objective. Also, the true meaning of education is not only to get a job. It is more closely related to our mind, behavior, and habits. Your major is just one of many tools my friend.
As Nadiem Makarim (the Indonesia Ministry of Education) said, “Do you know what percentage of our graduates take their study program at work? 20 percent max. Eighty percent of our graduates do not enter the sector where the study program is.”
I’m an undergraduate philosophy student, but I’ve made it to get a full-time job in the digital advertising sector. What is the correlation between digital advertising and philosophy? Fuck, I still confused. I may answer this question in another article.
What led me into current circumstances, to pay my own shit, to fulfill my belly, is more than just my major. I would love to say, it is more closely related to my relations, my dedication to taking an online course to get a certificate, my mindset to choose to suffer by writing this shit on 02.44 am rather than masturbating, and many more sacrifices which I did in the past.
You need money to go to college, you need college to get a job, you need a job to get money. Don’t get fucked up by this trap my friends. Again, education is only one of many tools to fulfill our dreams. My point is, for those of you who are still in high school, in the confusing time to move on with your major or not, still doubting your field, or those who still consider a major as the most important thing to become a successful person, know yourself first. Secondly, know your purpose. Lastly, try to answer this question: “What is the meaning of education according to you?”
Cigarettes at 02.55 am always lit. Thanks for coming folks, and have a beloved day…
