How Wealthy People Applied Aristotelian Logic for Their Business and Industry
“If you want to be the best in the industry, disrupt them” — unknown
Some of you may be quite familiar with some big names like Jeff Bezos, Garret Camp and Mark Zuckerberg. They are the founders of the largest companies in the world nowadays. Jeff founded Amazon, Garret founded Uber, and Zuck founded Facebook. How they can be the best in their respective industries is none other than because they managed to disrupt their industry field. Before successfully disrupting an industry, there is one fundamental thing we must do. It’s looking for the most basic thing of the industry.
The unique side of this way of thinking is that this method has been done since 2000 years ago where Aristotle created a model of thinking called basic principle thinking. Looking for the most basic thing. A deductive logic. In this regard, we can apply it to the business industry. For instance, what’s the most basic thing in business? You can say it is you have to own a large office building, a hundred employees, the legality of the company, etc. However, quite different from those things, if we use the Aristotle logic method we will find that the basic thing in business is when you are successfully doing some trade of values. That’s the fundamental thing in business.
How this method works is that you have to combine Aristotle logic (to find the most basic things) and disrupt them. I think that is what Jeff, Garret and Zuck do behind their successful business. As simple as that by finding the very basic things and then disrupting them. It’s just my speculative thought. I don’t really know whether Jeff, Garret and Zuck really read about Aristotle for their business. I just saw the common thread between philosophy and the business industry, on how they can be as huge as now. Let’s start…
Here’s one example from the industry of shopping. Before the digitalization era, the most fundamental thing if you want to shop is you have to go to the market, mall, grocery shop, etc. But then, Jeff saw an opportunity in this newest era. The basic things of shopping (going to the market, mall, grocery shop, etc) are disrupted. People no longer have to use up and consume a lot of their energy to go shopping. Jeff makes shopping that could be done by sitting in your living room, smoking cigarettes and watching Netflix. Touch the smartphone screen, select the product you want and wait a few days until your product arrives. That’s Jeff and Amazon. The one who succeeded in disrupting its industry (shopping and retail store industry). Тhе frаnсhіѕе hаѕ оnе оf thе lаrgеѕt оnlіnе mаrkеtрlасеѕ, Аl аѕѕіѕtаntѕ, а соmрutіng рlаtfоrm thаt іѕ undоubtеdlу аddіng tо thеіr wеаlth. This number even seemed like enough to pay off my country’s debt.
Another example comes from the industry of transportation, where Garret founded Uber and became one of the most successfully disrupted industries of transportation. Long before Uber appeared, maybe we still remember back then that the basic thing if you want to start a transportation business is having a fleet and a lot of cars, hiring hundreds of people to become drivers and so on. In Indonesia we remember the bluebird taxi. In New York there is a yellow medallion taxi. However, Uber then appeared and managed to disrupt the industry of transportations. If you want to start a transportation business, you no longer need a lot of fleet and cars or hire hundreds of people to become a driver. Just start with one simple app and software, you can run the business. Ubеr hаѕ bесоmе оnе оf thе bіggеѕt tесh соmраnіеѕ іn thе wоrld, which mеаnѕ thаt іt іѕ аlѕо росkеtіng ѕоmе bіg buсkѕ. Enough to pay for the mouths of those who have doubt in you, right? lol.
Last example comes from the industry of communication. Decades ago -especially in my country- the communications industry was not as sophisticated as it is today. To be able to contact your girlfriend, you have to go a few feet from your home to look for a pay phone / phone stall / internet cafe. The 90s generation must still remember this moment, the moment where the internet is still a fairly rare item. Over time, information and communication technology experienced a very rapid growth. Modernization erodes old traditions. The fundamental thing of the industry of communications is the conversation between two or more people. Connect one with the other. To be able to do this, certain devices are needed. Then, Zuck stepped in with his facebook that managed to disrupt the industry of communications. Now, boys don’t have to walk hundreds of meters to be able to contact their girlfriends. There’s no need for a mother to insert a coin to a public phone for hearing the news of her migrating child. Zuck succeeded in disrupting the industry of communications. Now, the communication business that was originally in the form of phone stalls / internet café / pay phone is almost dead. Zuck discovered the fundamentals in this industry, and then disrupted them. Currently, Facebook has even acquired Instagram and Whatsapp. Аѕ оf 2021, Тhіѕ hаѕ ассumulаtеd thе tоtаl nеt wоrth оf Fасеbооk tо $550 bіllіоn and mаkіng Zuсk оnе оf thе rісhеѕt mеn іn thе wоrld. My men…
Amazon has almost no stores, Uber owns almost no cars and Facebook creates no content. It cannot be dodge that the internet is changing the game. But, that’s not my concern. The aim of this copy is actually inseparable from My view about philosophy. Philosophy, especially in my country, is like being eroded from the education sphere. Many paradigms are quite “funny” in defining philosophy. However, I also cannot deny that philosophy is like a double-edged sword. Yes, maybe I’ll bring that topic up on another occasion. Philosophy can also be beneficial. It depends on the pilot. The success of Jeff, Garret and Zuck is just a handful of examples of phenomena that we can surgically use by using philosophy. There are many phenomena other than industry and business that we can interpret by a philosophical approach. Thus, the notion of “philosophy is an irrelevant discipline today” makes me laugh like Gold D Roger after discovering One Piece.
